Japan protects geographical indications for Binh Thuan dragon fruit products

On October 7, 2021, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced the Geographical Indication Protection Certificate "Binh Thuan dragon fruit" with registration number 110 for dragon fruit products of Binh Thuan province, Vietnam.

The GI of Binh Thuan dragon fruit is the second GI of Vietnam officially protected in Japan after the GI No. 107 of Japan granted to Luc Ngan lychee products. Protected geographical indications can be said as "passports" to enter the Japanese market in particular, and the world in general. The protection of geographical indications means affirming the prestige of Binh Thuan dragon fruit in the Japanese market, opening up many new opportunities for the export and consumption of Binh Thuan dragon fruit in many different markets, especially are in fastidious markets (Europe, Korea, New Zealand, ...).

Like Luc Ngan lychee, the Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam has implemented many solutions to contribute to the success of the registration of geographical indications of Binh Thuan dragon fruit in Japan. Famous for being a difficult market, with very strict legal regulations on the protection of geographical indications, the registration of geographical indications of Binh Thuan dragon fruit in Japan is relatively complicated. Therefore, IPVN has provided support in two ways: to complete the application for protection of geographical indications to fully meet the provisions of Japanese law and strengthen international cooperation to speed up this process.

The event that Binh Thuan dragon fruit was successfully registered for geographical indication protection in Japan has laid the foundation for creating a competitive advantage for Binh Thuan dragon fruit to come to the Japanese market. Implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on geographical indications cooperation between the Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam and the Food Industry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, on August 7, 2018, the National Office of Intellectual Property was assigned to be the leading agency implementing the project "Support for registration of geographical indication protection in Japan for 03 products of Binh Thuan dragon fruit, Buon Ma Thuot coffee and Luc Ngan lychee" under the Intellectual Property Development Program period 2016 - 2020.
