Director General of WIPO visited Viet Nam
Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Francis Gurry and his entourage paid a two-day official visit to Viet Nam on 19 and 20 January 2010 at the invitation of Minister of Science and Technology of Viet Nam.

In the courtesy call in the morning of 19 January 2010,Minister of Science and Technology Hoang Van Phong said the visit of Dr. Gurry was an important event to the Ministry of Science and Technology as well as to the Government of Viet Nam. The Minister highly appreciated the precious assistance of WIPO rendered to Viet Nam in establishment and development of his country’s intellectual property system over past years. Dr. Gurry thanked the Minister for inviting him to visit Viet Nam and expressed the pride of the cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP) with Viet Nam. Dr. Francis Gurry also congratulated Viet Nam on achievements gained over past years. He said “Viet Nam is integrating into the world market,so intellectual property should plays a very important role in economic,scientific and technological development of the country. And WIPO is to support Viet Nam in development of its intellectual property system”.
Taking this opportunity,the Minister awarded Dr. Gurry a Commemorative Medal for his contribution to the development of science and technology of Viet Nam. Addressing in Awarding Ceremony,the Minister stressed “Dr. Gurry has made important contributions to various socio-economic areas of Viet Nam,including to the development of science and technology. And,intellectual property contributes to the development of not only science and technology but also of different fields namely industry,commerce,culture…”

In the afternoon of the same day,the WIPO delegation led by Dr. Gurry also paid a working visit to the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (NOIP) where he also attended the Launching Ceremony of Distance Learning Programme on Intellectual Property in Vietnamese language,a Press Conference and a Television Interview on IP.

On 20 January 2010,Director General Dr. Francis Gurry visited the Hanoi University of Engineering and Technology,Vietnam National University where he had a talk on the role of intellectual property in the socio-economic development to students and lecturers of the University. He also witnessed the Signing Ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on IP between NOIP and the University.
