Geographical indication protection “BAC KAN” for blue-necked duck

On June 5, 2023, the National Office of Intellectual Property issued Decision No. 756/QD-SHTT on granting Geographical Indication Registration Certificate No. 00130 for Bac Kan blue-necked duck products. The Department of Science and Technology of Bac Kan province is the organization that manages this geographical indication.

Bac Kan is a mountainous province located in the center of the Northeast sub-region in the Northern Midlands and Mountains region, within the geographical coordinates from 21048'22'' to 22044'17'' North latitude and from 105025'08'' to 106024'47'' East longitude. The report "Water resources planning for the period 2021 - 2030, vision 2050" of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2021, confirmed that the duck is a native animal of Bac Kan province, which have rare genetic resources that need to be preserved and protected for sustainable exploitation and development.

 

Adult Bac Kan blue-necked ducks have large, short necks; small, short legs; leg height from 5.8 to 7.8 cm; neck height from 11.5 to 13.2 cm.

Whole fresh blue-necked duck meat has thick meat, thin skin, and a thin layer of fat under the skin; bone ratio from 25 to 38.2 %; meat rate from 65.7 to 72.8 %; lipid content from 10 - 27.8%.

The specific properties and quality of Bac Kan blue-necked ducks are due to the unique natural conditions of the geographical area. The geographical area has very complex terrain and geomorphology, including a system of high hills, low hills, limestone mountains, surrounding tectonic and erosion valleys. The temperature amplitude between day and night in the geographical area ranges from 7 - 13oC. In winter, the temperature often remains lower than 15oC during the days of the Northeast monsoon. The geographical area has clear, clean water sources, not contaminated with heavy metals such as Arsenic, Lead, Mercury, taken from the river and stream system: Cau River, Nang River and Yen Lac River.

Some unique features of local people's farming methods also contribute to the unique characteristics of Bac Kan blue-necked ducks, specifically:

When choosing breeds, it is necessary to choose blue-necked ducks whose parents weigh from about 2.0 - 2.2 kg/male and from about 1.8 - 2.0 kg/female. Breeding and incubation of eggs are carried out in geographical areas. Ducks have smooth feathers and no deformities.

The farming method is grazing/semi-grazing. Raising density is from 5 to 6 fish/m2. Natural foods (snails, shrimp, shrimp, mixed vegetables) are mainly used. On cold rainy days, industrial feed can be supplemented at a rate of no more than 50% of the total feed amount. Commercial ducks are sold after about 4 months from the start of raising ducklings. Commercial male ducks weigh from about 1.8 - 2.2kg. Female ducks weigh from about 1.6 - 2.0 kg.
